I give you a lot of props for coming up with a method to try to simulate vertical pitch movement. I never thought of using the third person controller in this fashion. The game is very dark and hard to see. The metal effect in copercube can darken elements depending, on the map you use for the reflective effect. Maybe try to lighten the map or pick one that uses less black and dark colors. Also try parenting some lights behind the player ship, and just above the cockpits of the enemy ships. They don't need to be really bright but they need some light. Especially due to the movement of the ship you defiantly need some to have crosshairs to aim properly.
