About publishing to the Internet

This may seem a silly question, but if I 'publish to the internet' via ftp (eg, ftp://ftp.mysite.com/myfolder), is the rcd file also copied or transferred to the destination folder?
Reason for asking is that although the index.html page loads if I type in the URL, the images are not showing and so I thought that having the rcd file in the document route (or not having it...) might be the reason.

Thanks if anyone can help.

Hi,
no, only the .html, .js and .css files are uploaded. Your .rcd file is your project file for creating the website and won't be needed.

It sounds maybe your images are not uploaded, but difficult to say without seeing it. Maybe you could post the URL?

Try "Publish to local disk", then go to the folder were you exported. There should be 3 folders, bottom/rc_images/top, plus your web pages. You can also see what images you have.

Double click on the "index.html" file or right click and open with a browser, try both. Your website should come up in the default browser or the browser you picked.

If you're not seeing your website something is wrong.

(Many use a FTP client and upload the those files from that folder. Once the program is set up it's just a few clicks to upload your project.)

Donald

Hi niko, thanks again for your help...

Seems I 'lost my marbles' a bit.... In fact I didn't use ftp at all to upload the files (including the rcd file).

What I did was, I used the file upload function in cPanel to upload the files: rcd, html, css, etc. I also created a folder in the document route called 'images' and uploaded all images into there. In other words, the document route contains everything that the project folder on my local disk does. Yet for some reason the images aren't showing. This is the URL.http://www.third-millennium-trad...

Thanks. I've already published to local disk many times as a test and all images show as normal or expected. Not too sure what you mean by three folder though. The document route contains exactly the same files and folder (called 'images') as on my local disk, and checking the html code via cPanel shows that the 'images' folder is being referenced for all images, but the images are not showing.

Are you using the "Publish to local disk" and a FTP client or "Publish to the Internet" thru RC? (Not copy and paste into your C panel.)

Sorry, the top and bottom folders are for menu page management.

Web page refresh, top left arrow circle? ctrl-F5

In Edge, Chrome or Firefox, clear everything: crtl-shift-delete

Just some thoughts, you may already done.

ajac73, your making this much harder than it really is.
Call your host and get the exact string to use with the RC publish to the internet. And or the other boxes.
They will be glad to help you.

Or take a look at Filezilla and Total Commander and just upload the files from the "publish to local disk", you should not have to do anything else or change anything.

I was going to use upload from the C panel but with my host you have to have it set up to do that, or it will not load all the folders/files.

You may have to clear the files in the folder your website is in and reload. /public_html/your website

From the user guide, page 28:

Using Publish to local disk
For this, choose the menu command 'Publish -> Publish to local disk'. A dialog will appear to select a target directory.
When you press OK, all HTML and image files will be generated on your disk, in the directory you selected.
You now only need to upload these to your webserver or FTP server. For this you can use any FTP program. Ambiera
recommends the free FTP client 'Filezilla' (http://filezilla-project.org/) or WinSCP (http://winscp.net/).

Using RocketCake's built-in FTP client
RocketCake also has a built-in FTP client, which can upload all the files automatically for you. For this, choose the menu
command 'Publish -> Publish to the Internet'. A dialog will appear, asking you for the address and login data for the server:

I was very cautious/scared about using Filezilla (I'm 74). But once I set up Filezilla I now have control over several websites from one screen with just a few clicks. And with the "Quickconnect" button you don't have to enter all you site info, just one click and your ready to go. I have different web design programs and this is so much easier than try to get the exact correct string to upload with the built in FTP client. At least for me.

Best Regards

You don't have to use FTP to publish to local disk and I didn't use 'Publish to the Internet'. What I said was, that I used the file upload function in cPanel to upload the files to the document route directory. Refreshing the page makes no difference and I always clear cookies and cache routinely.

Thanks for helping... What do you mean by exact string? The FTP address that I have to give if I use Publish to the Internet?

Using the cPanel upload function is exactly what I did, but I'll check with my host to see if it's set up correctly.

I'll try clearing the files from the document route folder that the files are in and re-upload them, but don't think that will work.

I may opt for Publish to the Internet using RCs FTP client, but don't have an FTP address set up yet, so will have to do that first.

If you "Publish to the Internet" you will need the exact "string" to go in the top box after the double //, EG:

ftp.inmotionhosting.co/public_html/yourwebsite.com

2nd box: your cPanel login
3rd box: your cPanel password

I don't use this, that's why I said to contact your host when you have this open, fill it in and save it.

The folder I meant that may need clearing is the public_html/your site.org in cPanel files.

Your host should also have how to do/tutorials on these subjects. Like:

https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/website/ftp/getting-started-guide/

https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/website/where-to-upload-files/

https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/cpanel/how-to-upload-a-file-using-file-manager-in-cpanel/

And AFAIK, you don't need an FTP address setup when using the RC FTP export or Filezilla. Only if using the cPanel upload, that is with inmotionhosting. Others I don't know about.

I'm out of solutions.

But the string is an address... I said 'ftp address....' because ftp is at the beginning of the 'string'. Anyway, that aside, the document route or folder that I'm using is not public_html but another folder under the home directory, but this shouldn't make any difference.

"the document route or folder that I'm using is not public_html but another folder under the home directory, but this shouldn't make any difference."

Are you sure?
What does your host say?
Or is your site is working ok now?

Well the site is just a one-page one and because I had enough disk space, etc, available, my hosting company allowed me to add a sub-domain for which I created another document-route/folder under the home directory.
Anyway, it turned out that the image filenames in the html code were all lowercase, whereas some of the filename characters were uppercase, so that's why the images weren't loading. So I just edited the html code accordingly and the images now load properly.

Thanks to everyone for your help...
