I was looking at the behavior_moveObjectByPositi behaviour it seems to be an interesting option, I was wondering what would be the best way to stop the character walking in place if you click on a wall or an object that is actually clickable for another interaction

You could use "on proximity" to the switch/wall -

...then "change animation" to "idle"
...and set variable: [hash]player.movementspeed =0

Replace the word "Player" for whatever your character node is.

Now when the player walks up to the wall/switch, he should stop and change animation from "walk" to "idle".

Same can be done for "climb" if it's a ladder.
