If I enable Navigation Buttons the back and forth buttons will -by default- appear outside the image, and will prevent the images from using the full screen width because they need space to the left and right of the image. On small devices such as smartphones this is not ideal as the screen width is low anyway.
Is it possible to use additional code to make the navigation buttons appear inside the image, and to adjust color and transparency of the buttons?
Or maybe by editing the wsp_gallery script?
And if so, what would the code string be?

I looked a bit into that, and I don't think that would be easy to do without significantly chaning the gallery. But I don't know very much about that, maybe there is a way I don't see.

You can uncheck the option "navigation buttons", then the image will get a bit larger and the buttons won't take up screen size.
