Hi,

what exactly is the difference between "subtitles" and "captions" when adding a track file to a HTML5 video element? I go for "subtitles" now, but I think "captions" does the same thing, doesn't it?

I think the main difference is that “subtitles” are meant for people who can hear the audio but just need the text (for example because the video is in another language), while “captions” are for people who can’t hear the audio at all.

So captions usually include extra information like sound effects, music, or who’s speaking — e.g.

? Music playing ?

Subtitles, on the other hand, just show what’s being said, without any of that.

That makes sense! Thank you very much!
