Hey everyone, I saw there were already some discussions on the forum about generating 3D assets with AI, but today I decided to write a short article about how I texture the low-poly 3D assets I create myself. I’ve attached a PDF below where I walk through my AI-based texturing workflow step by step.

I know a lot of people are still skeptical about AI in game dev, but I think that if you’re not the strongest artist, it can really help with indie development. This approach can also be useful when working with downloaded assets - you can just repaint the textures to better fit your project. Hope this helps, and if you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask.

Thanks for that.

I do have a lot of 3d mesh spaceships and interiors that never had any texturing done although the models themselves were quite good.

I will check it out as manual texturing takes a log time IMO.

guest_Robbo, it’s an extremely convenient method for this kind of work. You can texture different 3D models as long as they have solid UVs, and you’ve created a proper layout map for the AI so it understands which UV island corresponds to what.

Hey, that looks really cool! Thank you for sharing

Thanks okeoke! If you give this method a try and like it, I’d really appreciate the feedback. It’d be awesome to see what you create - feel free to share your work here to show that AI is a real tool, not just some silly toy that can’t be taken seriously.

I only gave it a basic test. But it actually works pretty well.
Though obviously there is stuff that needs to be fixed manually - but still.

I found random online tool to do the retexturing - I believe it's just SD 2.0

It's 100% not perfect, and you probably can tell it's AI generated, but it's also much better than everything I can paint myself, especially in that amount of time.

okeoke that’s already a great result. The only thing I’d personally suggest is making a more detailed layout for the AI - basically drawing a simple texture that clearly shows how you want the final 3D model to look.

It does add some extra time to the workflow, but for example, I made an image in a few steps to demonstrate the final 3D chest asset. After generating the texture, I didn’t have to do any manual touch-ups because during the preparation stage, before sending it to the AI, I created a more detailed mockup that clearly showed what I wanted in the end.

But okeoke yeah, I definitely like the result you got. I’d also be curious to know what tool you found specifically for working with textures that you mentioned - I’d love to give it a try as well. Thanks emoji icon_smile

It was some general something like deepai, or similar name. I created a free account it gave me 20 credits I spend 12 to generate that image:)

I created a more detailed mockup that clearly showed what I wanted in the end.

Tbh, If I could create textures with that quality I wouldn't even update it anymore and just say it is good enough:) It's a bit beyond my artistic abilities.

I also tried running stable diffusion 1.5 locally in order to recreate something similar, but it didn't work. I suppose some more modern tool is required.

I actually remember it being better somehow. Probably, I messed up the settings.

LOL, thanks, I appreciate it - but honestly, painting a texture like that in Photoshop is a 10-minute job. You just block in the base colors, add some simple shading, and draw a few minimal lines to show where the details should go. It’s really straightforward and not all that creative, to be honest.
And yeah, 20 generations is definitely not much. That’s why I’d suggest using Gemini with its Nano Banana model - plus Google gives you a pretty generous number of free generations. I’m not sure of the exact limit, but I think it’s around a hundred per day.

Nanobanana is crazy good actually. It once again was almost just a grey texture. I only painted the pinpad on top.

It's far more than something I can do myself.

Oh yeah, it looks great - I’m honestly really happy this method is working not just for me anymore. I saw your post about the "CopperCube Narrative Kit" - it’s an incredibly slick and useful toolset, and I rely on it a lot these days.
With Nano Banana’s capabilities and your code, I might actually be able to make my own game. Anyway, I’m really glad my advice helped you, since you’ve helped me (and I’m sure many others) bring ideas to life in a way that’s simple and accessible.

Thanks:)
Also if you have any feedback on Narrative kit, some improvement ideas or bugs you found, please let me know.
