It would be nice to be able to give objects a name in the properties window just like in VB. It would then be easier to find the objects in the element browser window.

Yes, you are right. But for now, you need to go with the IDs of the elements automatically generated. They never change, so you could use them as well. To get the id of any element, right-click it and view it's HTML code. It's the id and loos like this:
id="wsp_8538c1f"
