Tumbling Viewport in Editor Issue

Hello,

I recently downloaded Coppercube 6 to give it a try and am contemplating purchasing the pro edition. Thank you for releasing this free version.

I have been working in 3D for a long time and I find the current method of tumbling the perspective view a bit problematic. Currently, it appears that when you hold down the LMB to tumble (or rotate) the view, the rotation is around the camera's axis. It's like standing in the middle of a room and spinning. This makes it difficult if you need to orbit around an object. Currently, if I need to move around an object, I need to tumble, pan, tumble, pan, etc., until I finally get to the other side.

In most 3D programs, tumbling functions by rotating about the center of the viewport. In many 3D programs you can bring an object into focus (press a shortcut key when an object is selected and the viewport zooms to it, centering it in the viewport) and when you tumble the viewport, it tumbles around that focused object. This makes it easy to work with 3D geometry in the viewport.

Currently, the 3D camera is functioning like a first person shooter camera. While this is great for a game, it is not ideal for level editing when putting together a level or editing 3D geometry. I would like to ask if we can get an alternate method of tumbling the viewport that would work like I mentioned above (more like a standard 3D package like Max, Maya, Blender, MODO, etc.).

Thanks.

I understand your concern. I use the tried and true method of multiple viewports to see all sides of an object.

You can make a orthographic view in Coppercube (Top, Side, Front and Perspective) plus you can also create a viewport a asset sees, like a camera or a light - making placement and editing fairly easy.

For level editing, I use a combo of perspective and top-down/left for placement.

Yes, I think there is also another thread wanting other camera controls. I guess it could be possible to add conrols using a plugin, but I haven't tried this out yet.

Well, when it comes to the editor, it should function much like a 3D modeling program does (as far as how to move the viewport around). Never, in a 3D modeling program, is the camera's center what you rotate around when you tumble the viewport. Instead, it is normally the center of the viewport that becomes the camera target for tumbling.

When this is the way the viewport camera works, then it is easy to work on geometry. For example, if I want to change the texture on each side of a cube, then I could focus on the cube (ensure it's at or near the center of the viewport) and simple tumble around it, clicking faces and changing textures.

The way it's done now, I have to tumble, pan, tumble, pan, etc. to get to the face I want. This is a lot more difficult than it needs to be.
