Here's a free asset I made, if anyone wants it. It's a fairly large 3D city map. (More FreeCity maps will occasionally be in the comments below).

🔎︎

I used "CityEngine" to procedurally generate random roads, buildings and textures. It's the first city I've tried to make using this method so it's probably not perfect. (Took less than a minute to generate the entire city.obj and textures, lol).

Procedural Generation is very quick with different layout and texture options for Realistic, Sci-fi, Plain, Nightlights. Can use real map data or random generator and can manually place/tweak road and building placement.

Seems to work well in Coppercube, I'll definitely be using it to create base-world assets and maps for my games. You can limit the output file size so it doesn't get too big for RAM.

*You'll notice that I accidentally deleted the ground plane. You'll need to add plane/terrain underneath the city at certain points where the player can fall through the map.

It's just a test file (99MB) but if anyone finds it useful, feel free to use it however you like.

sweet ! - nice large map.

If I wasn't already making a game I would be tempted to create a racing car game using this asset, or maybe a "Covid-safe" home delivery service on a timer where you start off with a dumb little moped and earn money over time to buy upgrades and end up with a turbo charged V8 and scream around town in it - would be funny and entertaining..

The quicker you are, the more money you earn...and if too slow you get debited money... - heh :)

Thanks Robo! That's really cool, they sound like great ideas! Would be a really good fun game.

Here's a Night City as well (59MB).

I'll probably make a few different cities and post the links here for people to download...

Thank you!

Sure, no problem, here's my exact workflow for ArcGIS CityEngine 2019.0 (build 5403) used for the Cities I uploaded here...

1- Open City Engine (I then just close the login page).
2- I select "Create Imaginary City" from the City Wizard.
3- I change the Dimension to "100" and the Height to "0".
4- Click "Next", Select "City Size: Small For Laptop".
5- Click "Default City Layout", "Click Next".
6- Select a "City Type" (International/Schematic/Sci-Fi/Night).
7- Click finish.

Done! (Takes a minute or two to generate the city). You should see things appear the "Scene" panel - it should say "Heightmap", "Obstacle" and "StreetNetwork Objects".

Sometimes it takes quite a few minutes to generate everything. It does the map first, then the roads/streets, then gradually adds the buildings last. If it has generated the streets, just leave it for a few minutes longer and it should generate the buildings too.

Next, assuming it's generated properly, to save/export the City.....

1- Click on the City in the 3D viewport, next press "Ctrl" and "a" to highlight the entire City Map (highlighted in blue).
2- Click "File>Export Models".
3- Select "Wavefront.obj", click "Next".
4- Click "Finish".

The City can then be imported to Coppercube as a "Static Mesh". All the textures should load into Coppercube automatically during import of the City Model.

Most of my cities (although I choose "small for Laptop" option) are fairly large but take up less than 100MB total - some smaller than 50MB - which seems ideal for Coppercube.

Please let me know if it works or if you'd like any more help. I can make a youtube tutorial if you;re still struggling.

Tried to make a tutorial video but for some reason none of the screen recorders would capture the menu options :/

Here's a visual PDF guide I made instead. Please let me know if you want any more help....

when i started thinking about 3d development some years ago, i went through some 200 software packages: landscapers, asset modellers, bushmakers there is so much out there...

there are more ways to create citys,
i think these are the best free tools:

- osm plugin for blender
- XPlane flight simulator has several world editors = this is probably more appropiate for cc as it is much more geared to low poly asset generation (mobile)
-- osm2xp
-- w2xp
-- ortho4xp
they make or export as objs Xplane itself uses a crippled obj format that is ultra lightweight.

incomplete, there is a lot more that I researched but not at hand now.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. Have downloaded those and will give them a whirl - looks like you can generate entire Countries in high detail with those :o

I was / am still into historic pictoral mapping

the 3D research went on with the intention to use it
to recreate these maps into 3D. To have them over the ages and thus create a 3d timeline for a site.

like so:
- march lands
- march lands with village
- march lands with town (Amsterdam)
- march lands with bigger town (Amsterdam)
- Polders emerge etc. etc.

It (is) would be a Collossal project,
the procedural approach is therefore the way to go for the lightweight and consistent modelling.
also the torch image styling software will help in recreating the desired styling (pastel impressionist or cartoonish)

so far I only managed to make a few tiny cities in sketchup
