Hi,

I did quite some programming with Irrlicht the days back and accidently stumbled across this nice engine.

Some questions:
a) Is Niko still reading here?
b) Is CC still continued?
c) Is DX11 coming at some point?
d) Is there a link to the C++ API without the need to buy the studio version (which I would do ofc!)

Thanks!

a) sometimes yes but not as much as Steam forum
b) very rarely unfortunately, we did get 64 bit support Dec-20 so was a nice addition.
c) I hope so...Niko ????
d) I dont think so, anyone ??

If you mean the source code, No you have to have the studio version to get access to the CC's client source (which is based on Irrlicht). However if you mean the actual API, Irrlicht uses C++ for it's API interface as you know, while CC uses Javascript, and CC's js api is not as feature heavy as Irrlicht's, which is really unfortunate since it is based on the same engine and all of those features are already in it, just buried away unable to be called by js (afaik)

Thank you! Well I was not aware that it uses indeed the Irrlicht engine behind the scenes which would be of course a good solution.

Question is if it's a heavily modified version of Irrlicht? Probably need Niko to answer that...

Yes, its basically irrlicht with a lot of stuff on top of it (loading ccb files, behaviors, actions, physics, sound etc).

Still reading, but have not that much time for answering, unfortunately.
Also still developed, but not as fast since it has gone mostly free with v6.

But the more people are supporting Coppercube by getting the pro edition, the more time I can invest into more updates :)

Knowing some Irrlicht internas I'd say you simply cannot hook a completely different engine into coppercube. It's just not the way it works. That would be a huge task and Niko would have to start over everything.

i don't think start over everything.... other engine supported by big community with regular update. and don't forget for dx11 or vulcan niko need to start over everything : rendering, api....

Well first Niko would have to wrap this head around an engine he doesn't know.

Then he would need to write a wrapper to integrate that engine into CC.

I think it's an easier task to upgrade the existing underlying engine to a newer render framework.

as an example, look at Game Guru Max - last year the dev's decided to scrape their core api and move to Wicked Engine... I think they were suppose to have a final release last September... but they ( there are several developers over there and remember, Niko is just one person) didn't realize what was going to be required. To date, they still do not have a working version. I do admit, they have done some good things with it, but they are going to be in alpha updates for some time yet....

So, yes I think Niko knows what he is doing by keeping CC as is and work to improve it along the way. And like he said, the more support CC gets, the more he can do about updates

Hi Niko, We appreciate all you of course but I think if you added directX 11 and things like that into the Pro/Studio versions would then make people upgrade and pay for it so would be better for you financially rather than relying on those that use the free version to upgrade to pay for possibly more additions later on....I hope this makes good sense to you..
