I think that most people want to keep visitors on their site, and as such I find myself always changing the option for my links from "open in same window" to "open in new window". I'm willing to bet real money that most people would prefer a new window for 90+% of their links and think the default should be changed. But at least make it an option that people can set in general preferences as to whether they want all newly created links to be "open in new window" vs "open in same window" - and of course, the word "window" should probably have been changed to "tab" by now.

Happy New Year everyone!

Also, it's not relevant here, but kudos to Niko for adding tel: and sms: type links - I've cut out so much custom HTML from my commercial sites just thanks to those two updates!

Peace.

Forcing users to do one thing by adding option as you want "newly created links to be "open in new window". Means every other option will be barred. After it you can’t open the link in the same tab in the browser, even if you would want to, cause browsers support option open in new tab, but not support option open in the same tab. Why not leave the choice of where to open the tab in the users’ hands.

There is generally one good reason to open a page in a new window, and that is that the user will need to refer to that content in order to complete a task in another window.

By gratuitously adding an extra window or tab, you are increasing users’ information-management burden.

Opening new tabs of the same website is redundant and confusing. If it’s the same website but a different page, users will use the navigation menu to navigate back or elsewhere if they need. Keeping users in the same tab helps them better understand the navigation flow of your site.

Links that take users to another page on the same website are internal links. Internal links should never open in new browser tabs, but rather the same tab the user is on.

External links, however, should open in new tabs. These links take users to a different website. Many designers make the mistake of opening external links in the same tab. There are many problems with this that designers need to know about.

If people want to leave a website, application, or document, they'll do so on their own terms.

90? is correct the same window option and the most people prefer it.

The word window is better than tab )))

I'm not sure if you are agreeing with me or not, but I suspect not, and that you misunderstand my request.

My English is obviously inelegant if I offended anyone with my suggestion.

In my own experience with RocketCake, when I create a hyperlink, if I want to link to something within my own RocketCake project, I use the "Page in this project" - which I agree should always open in the same tab.

But when I use "Website" and it already autocompletes the https:// portion of things, I am assuming I am linking to an external domain altogether.

Perhaps I am using RocketCake incorrectly and best practice is to always use "Website"? If so, why is there an option for "Page in this project"?

In any case, my further suggestion that perhaps wasn't clear, was to allow people to simply choose what the default was for themselves, not that it needs to be changed for everyone.

I'm sorry if I disturbed your sense of calm, but I appreciate you making me aware of my shortcomings.

Peace.

When I link to a page in my project, I use the "Page in this project" option. And then in the vast majority of cases I set it up so that the new page opens in the same window. There are exceptions, however, where I think it makes more sense to open the new page in a new window. And then I'll just set it up in Rocketcake. External links are of course always opened in a new window.

What I would like, however, is that Rocket Cake would automatically recognize whether you were linked to an internal page and then preset the opening in the same window as the basic setting, as it is now. But if you link to an external site, Rocket Cake should set the default to "New Window". That would certainly make a lot of work easier and might be a suggestion for a future update to the developer.

Oh this would be magical!

I think easiest would be for all "Page in this project" links to default to "same tab" (but OF COURSE have the drop down to change this option).

...and for all "Website" links to default to "new tab" (but OF COURSE have the drop down to change this option).
