Unity's asset store is an exception - Unity was not full featured enough and cost a fortune - then they allowed Unity to load extensions and such, then created an asset store and third party developers created all manner of items - but there was already a massive following and competition with Unreal and like engines. Coppercube is a smaller engine with a specific feature set - little to no programming and webgl functionality - namely, games on the web and mobile - which very few, if any, engines can do. However, there is simply not enough users for Niko to survive on asset store percentages alone - and not enough people who would purchase anything. Combine that with the level of people using Coppercube - mostly hobbyists and indies - and I doubt very much would be created or sold, so it's best for Niko to do what he is doing. Coppercube DEFINITELY needs to upgrqade its renderer to DX11 and allow for PBR, Tesselation and all the other cool stuff DX11 brings to the table. If Coppercube could compete with Unity and Unreal and the like, then many more developers would take notice and THEN an asset store MAY work - but that would be far in the future and require a full team to realize.
